Rainier for the first time. It is huge.” John Charles Olmsted in a letter to his wife Sophie in 1903. Originally developed as the site of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE,) the “first” world’s fair held in Seattle in 1909 (the second being the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair), Rainier Vista incorporates the iconic Mount Rainier into its experience. Now, a part of the grounds of the campus of the University of Washington, Rainier Vista boldly welcomes its visitors with the majestic mountain in the vista. If you use your imagination, you can conjure what the grounds of the 1909 exposition must have been like, bustling with activity, lined with grand facades, and towering in the distance, the grand mountain. The Conservatory, a botanical garden that houses five indoor environments for growing orchids, exotic palms, ferns, cacti and succulents and seasonal plants in Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill in Seattle, is a feature of one of the first Olmsted parks in Seattle that was completely a focus of the Olmsted Brothers. Volunteer Park opened in 1904. The Conservatory made its appearance in 1909. With its 3,426 glass panels and wood and iron framework, the Victorian era design of the Conservatory is modeled after the Crystal Palace of London, England. When the snow falls in the winter, the Conservatory reminds me of the Winter Palace of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Picasso painted this picture in the setting of Lapin Agile. Picasso is the harlequin figure on the right. The figure on the left is the cabaret owner, Gérard. The woman in the middle was a paramour of Picasso named Germaine Pichot. The harlequin is a figure from Commedia del’Arte, usually understood to be an acrobat, but also known as a trickster and an outsider. (It seems like all roads lead to the top of the butte and Sacré-Cœur no matter where you are!) Founded as a museum in 1960, this museum is dedicated to the unique history of "Vieux Montmartre," or Old Montmartre. The building that houses the museum is one of the oldest on the butte, built in the 17th century. Before it became a museum, the building was a private home, and certainly the oldest home in the 18th arrondissement. It was once home to the great Impressionist painter August Renoir. At his home here on Rue Cortot, Renoir painted his famous "Bal du Moulin de la Gallette" in 1876 depicting an afternoon scene at the famous mill environment situated high up on the Rue Lepic. Other artists lived here in the 19th-early 20th century including including Raoul Dufy, Émile Bernard, and Suzanne Valadon. On the premises in the back of the museum are a series of three gardens referred to as "Renoir's Gardens." The gardens overlook the vineyards of the Clos de Montmartre that sit below. A conductor must study the score in depth in order to understand how the music is to be performed. The instruments and role of the performer is on the left. The music of that instrument is on the right. The conductor must simultaneously both read the score horizontally to follow the music as it is to be played as well as vertically to see what instrument is played and when. Additionally, the conductor rehearses the orchestra using the score. I spent a lot of time in Montmartre, walking, imagining the great Impressionist painters and writers and musicians that lived in this district back in the day, creating timeless works. One of those is the musician Erik Satie, a favorite of mine. I passed his home in Montmartre on the Rue Cortot, on the way to Sacré Cœur on thé top of the hill. One morning on my way to work, I looked up at an overpass to see the silhouettes of people walking on the sidewalk in the rain with their umbrellas open over their heads. At that point, I knew what my subject for the day would be. As a Seattleite, I had the perfect painting in mind. I captured this composition in downtown Seattle later that day of pedestrians homebound after a day's work. This painting was effortless to complete. I always question my sanity getting up at 6:15 and driving to Captiol Hill to run but once I start I’m reminded of why I love running in Cal Anderson in the early morning. It’s so peaceful you forget that you are in the middle of the city. You get to know the parks workers – most of them usually wave. There is also a lady that is always out with at least two large dogs, sometimes a doggie friend joins them to make it three. They always say hello. The blues and greens in this painting perfectly capture that “fresh morning” feeling – where everything seems a bit more new, clear and clean.
